Tommy Hilfiger has built a worldwide reputation on his reinterpretation of the classic, spirited American style. And now he is setting out to dress the world from top to toe in partnership with one of America’s most illustrious shoemakers, G. H. Bass & Co. By Josefine Filippa Ørskov
The story of one of America’s great icons of fashion, Tommy Hilfiger (b. 1951), is one of vision and determination. The second in a family of nine children, Tommy Hilfiger started his first business venture in 1969 while still attending high school. He invested his savings, 150 dollars, in opening a clothes store called The People’s Place. But the young entrepreneur soon developed the idea of becoming a fashion designer in his own right and uprooted from his hometown of Elmira in upstate New York in 1979 and moved to Manhattan.
With New York City as his new creative playground, the self-taught designer soon garnered the attention of one of America’s great moguls of fashion, Mohan Murjani, who was on the lookout for budding talent to create a new menswear collection. Tommy Hilfiger could now pursue his vision of reinterpreting America’s spirited apparel classics to give them fresh appeal – a design ethos that remains at the core of the Tommy Hilfiger brand.
A man with a mission, Tommy Hilfiger is also dedicated to the wellbeing of the needy. One of his novel approaches to fundraising is to supply celebrity friends with new Hilfiger bags and encourage them to donate the bags to charity.
And bags are not Tommy Hilfiger’s only accessories. The man who brought ivy-league style to high street audiences and created one of the world’s leading brands of casualwear has now set out to dress them from top to toe. Earlier this year, Tommy Hilfiger announced a partnership with one of America’s most illustrious shoemakers, G. H. Bass & Co. – the supplier of choice for generations of Americans. The fruit of their partnership is a new footwear collection based on the classic Weejuns penny loafer by G. H. Bass & Co. And naturally, the loafers come with a subtle Hilfiger twist.
